Prince Of Persia

Jordan Mechner created the video game series Prince of Persia. It revolves around a series action-adventure video games that focus on different incarnations the Prince of Persia from ancient and medieval Iran. The games were developed by multiple companies and have been published. Broderbund published the first two games of the series, Prince of Persia and Prince of Persia 2 : The Shadow and the Flame. Red Orb Entertainment developed Prince of Persia 3D. It was published by The Learning Company. Ubisoft started developing and publishing this series with Prince of Persia, The Sands of Time in 2003.

The series has been relaunched twice after its acquisition by Ubisoft. It was made into a movie, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time. The film was written in part by Mechner. Walt Disney Pictures released it in 2010. The franchise also includes Prince of Persia The Graphic Novel as well as the Lego Lego Prince of Persia line. Prince of Persia’s spiritual successor is the Assassin’s Creed videogame series.

Original trilogy

After the success of Karateka, Jordan Mechner created the first game in the series, simply called Prince of Persia. The inspiration for the protagonist’s animation came from many sources, including the One Thousand and One Nights stories and films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Mechner used his brother as a model to create the rotoscoping technique. With its 20+ platform ports, the original Prince of Persia is one of videogame history’s most popular games. Despite the game’s success, Mechner went to New York University’s film department and produced an award-winning short film. He then returned to direct and design a sequel to the original.

The sequel, Prince of Persia 2 – The Shadow and the Flame was created internally by Broderbund under Mechner’s supervision. Like its predecessor, the game received high sales and critical acclaim. The Learning Company later bought Broderbund, which was then acquired by Mattel Interactive. Broderbund’s Red Orb brand released a new Prince of Persia game, Prince of Persia 3D in 1999. It was released for PC and Dreamcast only. Many users found it to be buggy and it was a disappointment commercially and critically. The Broderbund/Learning company’s games division, which contained the Prince of Persia franchise assets, was later sold to Ubisoft.

Images leaked from an Osiris project in 2012 were believed to have been the next Prince Of Persia title. Jordan Mechner commented on Twitter that the images weren’t from a Prince of Persia title. Yannis Mallat (CEO of Ubisoft Montreal) stated that the franchise was being “paused” in 2013. He added that it would resume operations once more information is available. Ubisoft stated that it was planning or considering future-generation entries in several franchises, including Prince of Persia. The gameplay trailer for Prince of Persia Redemption was uploaded by Ubisoft Montreal artists in 2012. It was only discovered in 2020. Jonathan Cooper, an ex-Ubisoft animator, stated that the trailer was a mockup for Khai Nguyen’s planned gameplay, which was used to pitch the title concept. Although the game was never finished, the pitch trailer was used by Ubisoft to create a similar trailer for Assassin’s Creed III.

Ubisoft Forward 2020 announced a remake of Sands of Time. It was originally planned to be released on January 21, 2021 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The remake was postponed to March 18, 2021 and Ubisoft delayed it indefinitely on February 5, 2021.
